Sterile Processing Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY: The Sterile Processing Coordinator will supervise and oversee the department’s staff and daily operations. This position will be responsible for ensuring that compliance standards and performance goals are being met. Serves as a key leader and educator to the Sterile Processing Technicians. Assures proper decontamination, quality assurance, sterilization of equipment, and distribution of sterile surgical instrumentation.


Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Education, Licensure and Certification: Central Service Technician (CST), or Sterile Processing Technician (SPT), or Surgical Technologist certification, or other related certification

Experience: Five (5) years of sterile processing experience in a hospital or multispecialty surgery center. Preference to candidates with previous supervisory or management experience.  Preference to candidates with previous experience with regulatory compliance and policies and procedures.

Physical: Good physical health required because of long periods of standing, walking and work required. Must be well coordinated and able to move about freely.  Dexterity necessary.  Visual and audio acuity.  Speak clearly and distinctly. Neat, clean and particular about appearance.  Must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull and lift minimum of 25lbs frequently, 50lbs occasionally

Mental: Stamina to withstand stress and strain.  Good memory, patient and tactful.  Emotional stability.  Able to both listen and direct. Skill in organization.

Language skills: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to successfully write business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions, and professionally interact with managers, employees, clients, vendors, and the general public.

Reasoning ability: Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and correct errors.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and forms to understand abstract and concrete variables.  Ability to think critically using inductive and deductive reasoning.


  • Independently demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Ensures new employees are properly oriented and trained
  • Identifies and remedies equipment failures and hazards posing potential risks to patients
  • Advanced knowledge of infection control, decontamination, and sterilization techniques
  • Knowledge and ability to operate, troubleshoot, and train staff on all departmental equipment including, but no limited to, sterilizers, washers, ultrasonic washers, and cart washers
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Independently demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Proficiency in utilization of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office and electronic instrument tracking system, if applicable
  • Utilizes all departmental equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions for use and departmental polices and protocols
  • Demonstrates proper phone etiquette when responding to inquiries made to the department
  • Completes departmental and institutional competencies within established required timelines
  • Maintains patient and facility confidentiality
  • Ensures appropriate use of PPE of self and Sterile Processing staff

JOB RELATIONSHIP: Is directly responsible to the Materials Manager.  Supervises Sterile Processing Technicians. Works collaboratively with all levels of the healthcare team including: vendors, physicians, anesthesia, and staff.


Full time 40 hour per week, Monday through Friday. Excellent benefit package. Over 5 weeks of paid time off per year. Wage DOE.
